Possible issues when working with DaDesktop
A handful of apps might need small adjustments to work smoothly with DaDesktop
Known problems when cloning Fresh Start images and how to fix them
The vast majority of applications behave as expected after being set up on a Fresh Start machine in DaDesktop (DD). But a couple of them can misbehave after cloning, and they require a few extra actions to get things running normally.
- Oracle Database Server – you’ll need to change the hostname from its duplicated version to 127.0.0.1
- Hyper-V server – after cloning from a Fresh Start machine, it suffers from duplicate MAC addresses when the External switch is enabled
- Google Chrome – may fail to start correctly on cloned machines due to a profile still linked to the Fresh Start image, particularly if that machine wasn’t fully shut down during cloning
- WSL - Windows System for Linux – our tests revealed that DaDesktop machines with WSL installed aren’t portable. In other words, moving a DD machine that has a WSL setup to another DD server will result in boot failures. We’re not sure why this happens, but we suspect Windows makes hardware assumptions at install time, and transferring the image to a different server triggers the issue. Since WSL is rarely used in training (Linux is normally accessed directly), we haven’t yet gotten to the bottom of this one.
- Issues where a trial software licence uses the MAC address to track the licence – here, the licence was bound to a MAC address, so after cloning, the system treated it as already activated and expired.
-
Applications that require licences may need to be installed after the Fresh Start clone is complete.
Other potential issues when using DaDesktop

Very slow Virtualbox seen when using Hyper-V and VirtualBox (This can happen without DaDesktop too)
Issue: VirtualBox on Windows slows to a crawl, making it nearly impossible to deliver a course—but the fix is super simple:
Fix 1: Remove Hyper‑V from Windows:https://www.wintips.org/fix-virtualbox-running-very-slow-in-windows-10-11/
Fix 2: Use the Hyper‑V Server workaround mentioned above—otherwise duplicate MAC addresses will appear, causing sluggish performance, boot hiccups, and other odd behaviour.
- Unable to type certain characters ie Apostrophes / Quotation Marks, Inverted Commas, when typing into a DaDesktop machine.
